One day my hot water went cold. We thought that it just ran out of the hot water that was in the tank. Well, we waited about a day and a half and it still was cold. So we located the temperature gauge and reset it. Still cold. We tripped the electrical breaker and gave it enough time to warm up. So it did. It was warm for about a day, then it started the cold thing again. We went through everything again but this time it didn’t work. Could this be the heating elements or something.

Sorry! The tanks heating elements have burned out. If you can handle the disconneting and reconnecting of the wireing (make sure you pull the circuit breaker first!– then turn off the water to the tank– then drain the tank) you can buy replacements, pull the old ones out and put in the new ones. (unless it is so old and corroded that you cannot undo the cover plates.) Good Luck (ps. the first time the tank went cold was when the first element failed, which flipped the circuit breaker. The second time was when the second element burned out.) If it is a really old tank– get a new one. Over the next ten years a new one will easily save you the difference in cost.
Have a professional examine it – if it’s tripping breakers, you have a short.
You have a defective circuit breaker.
