Hot water heater with multiple zones?

by Water Heaters on June 1, 2010

since domestic hot water temperature is required to be 120 in kitchens and 110 in bathrooms, and commercial hot water needs to be somewhere around 150 kitchen 100 bathrooms, how is a single hot water heater capable of delivering multiple zones different temperatures if there is only one tank? or if i am completely wrong then someone out there, preferably a plumber, tell me im an idiot and correct me. i dont know if theres a difference between electric/gas/oil, in there ability to deliver different temps, but insight on anyone would be appreciated.

A residential water heater (whether it be gas or electric) has only one temperature setting. This will be the temperature of the water for all the hot water faucets connected to this water heater. There is no way to make one faucet hotter or cooler than the others.

If you need hotter water in the kitchen, you can install a stand-alone unit under your sink called an instant hot water tap. These have an adjustable temperature dial so you can set it as hot as you like it.

If, for commercial reasons, you are required to provide different temperatures of water for different zones, more than one water heater needs to be installed, with each one set at the required temperature and each having its own dedicated plumbing.
