How do I know my hot water heater tank is full before I re-start the pilot light?

by Water Heaters on July 6, 2010

Sorry for the dumb question, but the manual says to never re-start the pilot light unless the tank is already full. What is an easy way to tell the tank is full. Thanks.

What you want to do is open the hot water tap in a sink near the hot water heater. Open up the water on the top of the heater. Then wait for all the air to run out of the faucet…when the faucet stops blowing air, and water is running out of the hot water side of the faucet, you have filled your heater.

hope this helps

Turn on the hot water valve in a sink and start to fill the tank, when the tank is full, the water will come into the sink.

The only time your hot water tank will be empty is if the water is turned off. So if you can turn on a hot water faucet and water comes out then it is full.

Turn on a hot water tap that the water heater feeds. If you have water coming out of the hot water taps in your house, your water heater is full.
