How water heater question?

by Water Heaters on July 15, 2010

A family is trying to determine what hot water heater to install in their house. They have narrowed it down to a tank style that holds 50 gallons of water constantly heated, and an instant hot water heater that heats water on demand. Which is more efficient and why?

single person, or one bath the instant is more efficient – multiple baths & people get the 50
instant’s cost more, but only heat on demand, if you turn on the washer & the shower, some body’s getting not so hot water
the 50 has to recover, but in a 2 bath house it’s plenty good – I have a 50 in in a 5 bath house with 2 jacuzzi tubs – it’s adequate

The main reasons to get an instant are
1) you rarely use the hot water ,so you don’t need 50 gal of hot water all the time

2) you use a lot of hot water and thus would continuously be running out of hot water because 50 gals is not enough.

Why do you want to heat hot water? You wrote, hot water heater. Mine heats cold water. It is a cold water heater.

Get a quote for both; be sure the quote covers all changes needed to install a tankless water heater. When people find out the real cost of installing a tankless water heater minds are made up pretty quick. There’s more to a tankless water heater than the price you see on the shelf. Normally you’ll be looking at around $1,000.00 more just for the install plus the price of the unit. Check it out; get a real turnkey price on both.
