the high temperature limit switch is bad causing the burner to shut off.
Throw it out. The water heater system has got out of order. Purchase a new one.
Your description is a little vague.
How old is it? What is the capacity? How is it being used?
If it is a Paloma or similar type sometimes the burner will shut down from back-pressuree at the valves, faucets or shower head. So turn on all the way before adding cold & use older type (non-conserving) shower head. It it also possible that your gas supply has low pressure or the fuel regulator/valve needle or diaphragm is worn out. We have a 35 yr old Paloma w/ a rebuilt regulator (5 yrs ago) still going strong.
