You can do completely away with your gas, if you switch to an electric water heater. If you get a 4800 watt dual element heater, you will have to run a dedicated 240 volt 30 amp circuit that requires # 10 gage wire. If you’re home all day long, wash clothes everyday, and take 30 minute showers, yes, it will cost more than gas. If you put a timer on it, wrap it and the pipes, the cost will not be more than gas. Good luck in all you do and may God bless.

Yes you can,an electric water heater needs no gas,but an electric heater is much more costly to operate compared to gas.

You would need to install an electric water heater instead of a gas one in which case there would be no pilot light. I would suggest an inline water heater. It heats the water as you use it. It saves money in electric costs. The costs will be rising next February and I fear the worst so you may want to really consider your reasons for getting rid of gas.

Electric water heaters don’t have a pilot light – no gas needed.

You’ll need a 220 vac power to the electric hot water heater. This power must be on it’s own circuit breaker. Some home builders will include a 220 vac run to the same location if they are thinking ahead.

"On demand" water heaters are good but they are costly to buy and install. You’ll need to run 220 vac power to these water heater locations also. They have to be sized for the anticipated hot water demand.

electric water heaters doesn’t have pilot lights they run off electricity and have thermostats and heating elements that take the place of gas and yes you need to completely turn the gas off to that location, but you will also have to have a dedicated power source 240volt line ran where ever you install the new water heater, bet you didn’t know that if you call your local power company and tell them what your doing they will give you a new water heater for free, all you have to do is pick it up

Electric water heat costs more. You will also have to get a dedicated electrical circuit connection with breaker and wire. Gas heat is the best.
But if you was to get electric you could alway turn it off anytime and have 0 power consumption but who does?
