instantaneous gas hot water system – water goes hot and cold?

by Water Heaters on May 2, 2010

We moved house and have an instantaneous gas hot water system. Since we have been in the house we have not had a shower without having the water go freezing cold or burning hot at least 3 times. The water only stays at a nice temperature for a minute or two at a time. Nothing we have tried has made any difference. We don’t have any other appliances on at the same time either. The system only looks less than 10 years old. Any ideas, or anyone have the same problem? Perhaps this is what comes with having an instantaneous water heater?? We haven’t had a plumber look at it yet, or had it serviced.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you have a thermostatic shower which, when it tries to regulate the temperature, is cutting down the hot and opening up the cold, which in effect, reduces the flow of cold water through the water heatercausing it to shut down, hence the shower goes cold. Then when the shower calls for more heat the water heater re-fires and so the cycle goes on.
I assume your water pressure is ok ? to operate a water heater correctly you should have at least one bar pressure with one tap open. If you have`nt got this you could be throwing money away trying other fixes. If your water pressure is ok, de-scale the shower head with lemon juice or vinegar (try running the shower without the handset/rose and see if the temp. is stable) to ensure that sufficient water is passing through the shower to keep he water heater fired up. If this gives you no joy get your heating engineer to fit a new diaphragm in the water heater as an old streched one will require more flow to activate the heater than it should. good luck

Turn the hot water on go look at the heater. As long as the hot water is running. The heater should stay on. You may be better off calling a repairman.

This is not what happens with demand water heaters. It sounds like the water pressure is dropping at a certain point which shuts off the gas (cold) and then it relights when the pressure returns. Have it looked at. It should give you years of stable, even-temperature water. Be aware that it has to be correctly sized and maintained every year. Simple service goes a long way.

Sounds like an on demand water heater which is very economical and dependable. Not being able to see it, sounds like am t-stat problem. Have a tech look at it as it will be well worth the investment.Hope this helps.

You need to have someone look at it. I don’t know how long a warranty the heater came with but most normal water heaters only go up to 9 years. In any case, that’s definitely not normal, you should have a continuous supply of hot water without interruption. Another thing to check is does this happen at other faucets like the kitchen sink, if not, then the problem may be that you have an anti-scald shower fixture and it’s what is messing up, not the water heater.

Have a plumber check it out.
