Recently, I was doing some cleaning and I smelled just the slightest gas odor when I put my nose about 5 centimeteres from the pilot light area of my gas water heater. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to smell anything at all. Since the pilot light is igniting the gas at that sight, would that be normal and should I be concerned? Thanks.

I had a licensed plumber replace my broken water heater 5 months ago. Now the hot water comes out of the faucet rusty for a few seconds before it clears up . The plumber who installed the water heater came out and determined that the incoming and outgoing water supply pipes he installed were rusted. He showed me the rust on the outside of the brass fittings. He stated that the corrosion was caused by my well water. He said that he would replace the pipes at a discounted rate, but would not honor the 1 year labor warranty he gave me because the installation was done to code for city water.

2 key points:
1. The plumber used galvanized pipe with brass fittings for a natural gas water heater.
2. The plumber knew the water heater was on a well because I went with him to the main water shutoff next to the wellhead.

So – here are my questions:
1. Is it even remotely possible that galvanized pipe can be corroded to the point of running rusty water and showing rust on the outside of the pipe in only 5 months? If my water was that corrosive, wouldn’t I be unable to bathe in or drink it at all?
2. Should the plumber honor the 1 year warranty he gave me and replace the pipes at no cost since he installed the incorrect pipes for well water?
3. What kind of pipe should I have for a natural gas water heater on a well?

I think natural gas water heaters use a little electricity and my girlfriend thinks they don’t. On our natural gas water heater there are little wires that lead to a turn-able nob that can turn the water heater on and off. I think this is where the electricity is used and she thinks gas runs through them.

Single mom needs your help! Estimate 0, to replace existing lp water heater with natural gas one and connect to furnace and water heater. I heard there are conversion kits? If not, can I buy a natural gas water heater on my own for less, his charge is 0, uninstalled. Please advise. Anything may help. I really hope I can convert my current water heater. It’s only 6 years old.
I was told it was not convertible! The book said that the 40, 50 & 60 gallon heaters were convertible. He said he didn’t think so. Do you think he is trying to rip me off? Should I get another estimate? He said it would be 0 to hook up water heater and furnace if the water heater was convertable.
Im converting because this is a mobile home used as a cabin in the north woods. Five years ago when I was working I paid 0 to have the gasline brought from the road to the place. I am now getting the connection done because Wisconsin Public Service is now offering a 0 rebate to anyone who converts. I was told natural gas is a better choice in the long run. Plus it’s used very sparingly. A few winter weekends snomobiling… Am I doing the right thing. (Cory if you read this, please respond, I appreciate your knowledge)

My old gas water heater model ttw-1 from bradford-white gave up after 12 years of service. I need new one ASAP but I have trouble finding similar model in stores (Home-Depot, SEARS)
The old heater was automatic. It was plugged in AC and whenever the water temperature goes below worm it turned itself on. I see bunch of heaters in stores , but every one hes ‘ignition button’ which has to be pushed in order for heater to start. What model I should look for. The old one was 40gal 40K btu and short (~53")
AC explanation:
the heater is one with power vent, so it is needed for a turbine. Now I understand more about the heather technology. I could ot the original one soon, so I had to buy GE with similar characteristics.
Thanks everybody for answers

A quick question about plumbing codes. I am buying a house built in 1957. Upon inspection we discovered that the age of the gas water heater was misrepresented and that it was not installed properly. The seller is going to replace the water heater. Will the plumber have to bring the heater instillation up to current codes when they replace it?

I am specifically thinking about raising the heater 18 inches off the garage floor, having a properly sized line running off the T/P relief valve and running the vent so that it actually exhausts over the roof instead of in the attic.

Thanks for your help.
Thanks guys. You told me what I expected to hear.

Yes, the heater is in the garage. The agent wants to have her guy replace it rather than the plumber I got quotes from. She claims that she can get it done for 0. With the vent work, I question if she can have it done properly for that price. I’ll just have to hold her feet to the fire on making sure that the work is up to code!

She is already in a bad position for advertising the house as having a new heater. And this is just the begining of a long list of things that the seller’s disclosure misrepresented.
