Hi,

My basement was flooded due to a broken sump pump, and no backup sump pump was available. This caused my hot water heater to get wet. I have a 2006 model of Rheem auto-pilot. It won’t light up again. I’ve tried to dry it with a blowdryer, leaving it there for 3 days straight. The blowdryer even heated up the tank and gave me enough to take a quick, warm shower…

My question is, what should I do now? The pilot won’t light up again. It is an auto-pilot gas heater. I’ve seen Do It Yourself videos online, instructing how to light up a pilot.. But the model they showed in the video was not an auto-pilot. I am scared to light up mine because the manual’s instructions says "Do not light up the pilot manually."

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

I’ve had a plumber come by, and he told me to get a new tank. I want to try to get it to work first.

I have a Rheem hot water tank (2006 model).. It operates on an auto-pilot. My basement was flooded and now the burner won’t light up. The pilot is blinking a green light.

What should I do? Does this mean that I have to replace for an entirely new hot water heater? If so, what are your thoughts on a tankless water heater? Any recommendations?
I’ve had a plumber come by, charged me for telling me to get a brand new tank because Rheem will void the warranty (for parts) if they run an electrical test and find out that it’s due to flooding… This plumber doesn’t do electrical stuff. =/
And I don’t have flood insurance. =(
Nope.. it was a sump pump issue. I don’t have a backup pump neither… Where should I place this blowdryer? towards the electrical wires and inside where the pilot is??

After plumber attached a Watts 4.5 gal. portable water expansion tank to my water heat the following condition developed. When I turn on the cold water in upstairs sink, which is located right above water heater which is ground level, the water flow starts off cool and then turns HOT for about 45 seconds and then goes back to cold running water. What gives? Seems like this problem started after he installed the expansion tank and it is only at this particular sink . All other sinks in house are normal. On this particular sink the hot is hot but the cold is as described above. Any ideas someone. The plumber was of no help in solving this problem. Thanks for reading this.

Home Depot sells them as GE Smart Water units, but they are manufactured and serviced by Rheem Manufacturing.
I should point out that the problem has been ongoing since it was installed less than a year ago. Rheem has sent a plumbing contractor out four times. Insufficient natural gas w.c. has been ruled out. Dip tube is not missing and is not damaged. The thermostat control unit has been replaced TWICE. Yesterday, the burner assembly, and all its components, was replaced. The plumbing contractor pointed to the fact that the original burner’s flame appeared as if it were pointing upward and gripping something when it should look like the palm of someone holding a basket ball. The "new" burner looked fine when the plumber left. The next day, though, that "curled in" flame was back.

My 40 gallon hot water tank has failed and needs to be replaced. The hot water tank itself is being replaced under warranty. The questions that I have is regarding the non-covered charges that the plumber is saying is necessary to replace the tank. The tank and all related equipment is 12 years old. He stated that the current expansion tank should be replaced, because someone wouldn’t "replace a cars engine without replacing the radiator" and he would like to charge 5 for parts and labor. Dielectric connectors have to be installed due to code and he wants to change 1 for those. The current tank is on a stand that was built when the house was build and is made of 2×6 with a 3/4" plywood top. He stated that it should be replaced because the plywood on top got wet and probably wouldn’t hold if it got wet again. Instead of replacing the top piece of wood with wood, he wants to remove that stand and install a steel stand and wants to charge another for that. To sum it up, here’s the charges:

Expansion Tank – 5
Dielectric Connectors – 1
Steel Stand –
Total Parts and Labor Costs = 1

Here’s the pricing I see at Home Depot:
Expansion Tank – .77
Dielectric Connectors – .27 X 2 = .54
Steel Stand – .17
Total Parts Cost = .48
